The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched its annual campaign to combat underage drinking by targeting fake IDs at concert venues across the state. The initiative, known as Operation Prevent, began this month at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and will continue throughout the summer at various locations, including Northwell Health at Jones Beach Theater and Darien Lake Performing Arts Center.
According to the New York State DMV, last year saw the seizure of 349 fake IDs, with 307 individuals cited for attempting to use false identification to purchase alcohol. Those caught using a fake ID face penalties, including a ticket and the suspension or revocation of their driver's license for 90 days to one year.
The DMV is collaborating with the State Liquor Authority, State Police, State Park Police, and local law enforcement to ensure the success of this effort. DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder emphasized the importance of safety at these events, stating, "Our experts can easily spot a fake ID so they are not worth your time and money."
The campaign is part of Governor Kathy Hochul's public safety agenda, with support from the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee. The committee coordinates traffic safety activities and funds projects to improve highway safety and reduce accidents.
