A Troy man, Daquan Arrington, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Wednesday (June 4) for his role in a deadly drive-by shooting in Albany, New York. Arrington, 25, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter after the incident on June 5, 2024, which resulted in the death of 30-year-old Javon Ward and injuries to two others. The shooting occurred near Second and Quail streets when Arrington and his co-defendant, Paul Smith, fired 19 shots from their vehicle.
Arrington's sentencing was delayed due to a courtroom disturbance in April, involving an outburst from his attorney, Timothy Berry, who was later replaced by Paul Edwards. According to CBS6 Albany, Arrington declined to speak during his sentencing. He will also serve five years of post-release supervision.
Smith, 22, was sentenced to 21 years in prison in April for his involvement. The difference in their sentences was attributed to their criminal histories and the circumstances of the incident, as reported by Times Union. The shooting, which took place around 1:45 a.m., also injured a 46-year-old woman and grazed a 14-year-old girl's arm.
The incident has left a lasting impact on the community, with Ward's family expressing their grief over the loss of a well-known figure in their neighborhood. WNYT reports that Arrington was also charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon in a separate case earlier this year.
