Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan and Police Chief Brendan Cox will hold a press conference today to discuss efforts to reduce gun violence in the city. The event will highlight initiatives aimed at improving neighborhood safety and engaging local youth. In recent years, Albany has seen a decline in shootings, with numbers dropping from 101 in 2020 to 52 in 2024, as reported by Governor Hochul's office.

Earlier this year, Governor Kathy Hochul awarded Albany over $19 million to support violence prevention, targeted enforcement, and technology upgrades. This investment is part of a broader effort to enhance public safety in the city and address the root causes of crime. The funding will enable the Albany Police Department to expand resources in high-crime areas and implement evidence-based strategies to combat gun violence.

During a previous press conference, Police Chief Cox emphasized the importance of community involvement in addressing gun violence. He noted that while the city has been arresting fewer juveniles, those arrested have committed more serious crimes. Mayor Sheehan also stressed the need for community support, stating, "It's incumbent upon all of us to make our city safe."

Despite the progress, challenges remain. According to the Times Union, Albany has faced perceptions of public disorder and elevated crime, deterring visitors from the city. The press conference aims to address these concerns and outline ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and security of Albany's residents.
