The New York State Legislature has passed the Alexander John Smullen Traffic Safety Memorial Act, which allows family and friends of accident victims to set up memorials at the sites where their loved ones lost their lives. The bill, introduced by State Assemblyman Robert Smullen, honors his 14-year-old son, AJ, who died after being hit by a vehicle on Route Seven near Bellevue Women's Hospital in Niskayuna last year.
The legislation, Assembly Bill A.3938-B/S.5568-B, establishes a traffic safety memorial sign program to publicly memorialize victims of fatal vehicle collisions. The bill passed unanimously in both the New York State Assembly and Senate. Now, it awaits the signature of Governor Kathy Hochul to become law.
The bill authorizes the New York State Department of Transportation to implement the memorial sign program statewide. Assemblyman Smullen has urged Governor Hochul to sign the bill and the Transportation Commissioner to carry out the program.
