A 19-year-old man from Argyle found himself in a precarious situation after breaking into a shuttered prison to take photographs. On Saturday (June 14), Cody M. Mallon was discovered trapped inside a cell at the former Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill. The New York State Police from the Wappinger barracks responded to the scene at approximately 12:04 a.m. after receiving a report of trespassing.
According to CBS 6 Albany, Mallon had unlawfully entered the facility by crawling through a hole in the perimeter fence. Once inside, he became trapped in one of the cells while attempting to take photographs of the abandoned site. The Downstate Correctional Facility was closed in March 2022 as part of a state plan to shut down six state prisons.
Troopers, with the assistance of the Glenham Fire Department, helped Mallon out of the cell and subsequently arrested him. He faces a charge of Criminal Trespass in the Third Degree, which is a Class B misdemeanor. Mallon was issued an appearance ticket and is expected to appear in the Town of Fishkill Court at a later date, as reported by the Times Union.
