In response to the recent shootings in Minnesota, New York Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has called for increased security measures at the State Capitol in Albany. Heastie is working closely with Governor Kathy Hochul to ensure a larger law enforcement presence to protect lawmakers. The tragic events in Minnesota, where State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed, have heightened concerns about political violence. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were also targeted in the attack but survived.
Heastie emphasized the importance of safety, stating, "Our priority should always be the safety of our communities." He urged those involved in public events to remain vigilant. The New York Senate has concluded its legislative session for the year, but the Assembly continues its work, making security a pressing issue.
Other political leaders, including Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, have expressed their condolences and called for unity against political violence. Schumer has requested increased security for senators and a full briefing on member security.
The increased security measures at the New York State Capitol reflect a broader concern for the safety of public officials in light of recent events. As the Assembly continues its legislative duties, ensuring the safety of its members remains a top priority.
