Sincere Cancer, a 22-year-old from Schenectady, was sentenced to 25 years in prison on Wednesday (June 18) for his role in the 2021 killing of Destiny Greene, a 15-year-old Shaker High School student. Cancer pleaded guilty in April to second-degree attempted murder. The sentencing follows the earlier conviction of Brandon Rivera, who was also involved in the crime.

According to prosecutors, Cancer and Rivera planned a fake Facebook Marketplace sale as a setup for a robbery. On May 24, 2021, they shot into a car on Wilbur Street in Albany, where Greene was sitting. She succumbed to her injuries at Albany Memorial Hospital.

During the sentencing, Greene’s mother, Tareen Lynch-Greene, and grandmother, Fidelia Rodriguez, delivered emotional impact statements. Rodriguez expressed forgiveness, stating, "This forgiveness is for me to stay strong so that I can continue to navigate my family through this journey" (News10). However, Judge Andra Ackerman criticized Cancer for his lack of remorse, noting that he called his sentence "a little harsh" in a pre-sentence report.

Rivera, who pleaded guilty to the same charge in 2022, was sentenced in January 2023 and is eligible for parole in 2043. The plea deals for both men were intended to provide some closure to Greene's family (CBS6 Albany).
