Voters in Albany are heading to the polls today (June 24) to cast their ballots in the Democratic primary for mayor. The race features four candidates: Dorcey Applyrs, Corey Ellis, Dan Cerutti, and Carolyn McLaughlin. The winner will move one step closer to replacing Mayor Kathy Sheehan, who is not seeking another term. Sheehan has endorsed Applyrs for the position.
Polls across New York opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 9 p.m. To participate in the primary, voters must be enrolled in a party that is holding a primary. According to Spectrum News, early voting took place from June 14 to June 22.
In addition to Albany, other cities in New York, including Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo, are also holding mayoral primaries today. In Syracuse, Deputy Mayor Sharon Owens, who has the endorsement of outgoing Mayor Ben Walsh, is among the candidates. In Rochester, incumbent Mayor Malik Evans faces challenges from City Councilwoman Mary Lupien and businessman Shashi Sinha. Buffalo's primary features five candidates, including Acting Mayor Christopher Scanlon.
For more information on polling locations and hours, voters are encouraged to contact their local Board of Elections. Results are expected to start coming in shortly after polls close, though it may take several hours to count all the votes.
