An explosion rocked a home on Clinton Road in Canajoharie, on Thursday (June 26), injuring three people. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office reported that the blast occurred around 8:23 a.m. at 1567 Clinton Road. Deputies found one man with severe burns and two women with minor injuries. The man was airlifted to the SUNY Upstate Burn Center in Syracuse for treatment.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a propane leak in the basement, where construction was underway, caused the explosion. According to the sheriff's office, the severely burned man was attempting to light a pilot on a water heater, which ignited the propane gas. This led to significant damage to the house.
Emergency responders, including the South Minden Volunteer Fire Department, Montgomery County EMS, and LifeNet of New York, quickly arrived at the scene to assist the victims. The investigation into the explosion is ongoing, as officials work to determine the exact cause of the propane release.
The incident occurred near the border of Montgomery and Herkimer counties, prompting a response from departments in both areas. The community remains on alert as investigators continue their work to ensure the safety of residents.
