An Albany man, Lamont Evans, 29, has been indicted on charges of first-degree rape and burglary following a June 15 incident on Lancaster Street. According to the Albany County District Attorney's Office, Evans allegedly broke into an apartment and demanded a sex act from a woman he did not know. The woman was taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment. Evans was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently held without bail at the Albany County Correctional Facility.

Evans pleaded not guilty to the charges in Albany County Court on Monday (June 30). He faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted. During the arraignment, prosecutors highlighted Evans' extensive criminal history, which includes a felony conviction, six misdemeanor convictions, and multiple failures to appear in court. Earlier this year, Evans was sentenced to five years of felony probation for criminal mischief.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the severity of the charges and Evans' criminal background. He is scheduled to return to court on July 15. The judge has issued a no-contact order of protection for the victim.
