Today marks the groundbreaking of the new Knick Aquatic Center in Troy. Located at the Thomas A. Knickerbacker Park, at the corner of 103rd Street and Eighth Avenue, the center replaces the former Knick Pool, which closed in 2016 and was demolished in 2023. This project, funded by a combination of a NY SWIMS grant and American Rescue Plan Act funding, is set to revitalize the local community.
The new aquatic center will feature an eight-lane swimming pool, a splash pad, a modern lounge area, and a new building for locker rooms and bathrooms. All facilities will be fully accessible, catering to individuals with intellectual, physical, and developmental disabilities. The estimated total construction cost is $7.2 million, with $2.8 million coming from ARPA funding and $5.8 million from the NY SWIMS grant.
Mayor Carmella Mantello emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "This is a huge step forward in our commitment to reimagining the Knick Pool and providing a safe, modern space for families, children, and residents to enjoy for generations to come." The Knick Aquatic Center is expected to open in the summer of 2026, bringing back a vital recreational space for the residents of Troy.
The project is part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of life in the area, including the revitalization of the Knick Ice Rink. According to the Troy Record, the city council approved $6.3 million in bonding to support the construction.
