A tragic accident in Westerlo has left one person dead and several others injured after an SUV collided with a tractor-trailer on Monday (June 30). The crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of County Route 401 and 404. According to Albany County Sheriff Craig Apple, the SUV, carrying six people, failed to stop at a stop sign, leading to the collision with the northbound tractor-trailer.
The impact resulted in the death of one SUV passenger, while three others, including a child, remain in critical condition. The SUV was reportedly heading to Zoom Flume Water Park in Greene County. Sheriff Apple stated, "The trucker never had a chance to avoid the car," based on dashcam footage from the tractor-trailer, though the footage will not be released publicly.
The tractor-trailer overturned and leaked diesel near a reservoir that supplies water to Albany, prompting a hazmat team to respond. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained minor injuries.
The intersection has been the site of previous accidents, and the investigation into this incident is ongoing. Assisting at the scene were members of the New York State Police, Westerlo Fire Department, Greenville Ambulance, Green County Paramedics, and Durham Ambulance.
