The Sycamore Collaborative Meals Program in Schenectady begins today, providing free lunches to children and teens throughout the summer. The program aims to distribute 10,000 meals this year, surpassing last year's 8,000. Lunches will be available at various locations, including Mount Pleasant Library, Southgate Apartments, Jerry Burrell Park, Central Park, Steinmetz Park, and Hillhurst Park. The program runs until the end of August and is part of a broader effort to combat childhood hunger during the summer months.

The kickoff event at Jerry Burrell Park promises a day of fun and community engagement with games, raffles, food, a DJ, and a bouncy house. Community leaders will also be present to connect with local organizations and provide information to attendees. The Sycamore Collaborative, which operates the largest food pantry in the region, is dedicated to ensuring that no child goes hungry when school is out.

According to CBS6 Albany, the program has expanded its reach to 10 sites across Schenectady and Rotterdam. The initiative is part of a larger collaboration powered by United Way of the Greater Capital Region, providing free meals and engaging activities at accessible locations like schools, parks, libraries, and community centers.

The program is open to all children and teens, ensuring they receive nutritious meals, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and protein. For more information on meal sites and activities, families can visit United Way GCR's website or call 2-1-1 for local information.
