Hot Dog Charlie's in Cohoes is welcoming customers once again after being closed for more than a year due to a fire. The popular hot dog spot on Saratoga Street, which originally opened in 1964, has been a beloved part of the Capital Region for over a century. The reopening was announced on Friday (July 4) via a social media post, and the doors officially opened on Monday (July 7).
The fire in January 2024 caused significant damage, leading to the temporary closure of the location. Despite the setback, the third-generation family business, known for its mini-hot dogs and special chili meat sauce, is back in action. The brand's history dates back to 1922 when it was started by a Greek immigrant under the name New Way Lunch. Today, Hot Dog Charlie's continues to be a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
In addition to the Cohoes location, Hot Dog Charlie's operates two other restaurants in Rensselaer on Columbia Turnpike and in Lansingburgh on Fifth Avenue. The reopening of the Cohoes location is a significant milestone for the community and the family that owns the business.
News10 ABC reported that the current owner is the grandson of the original founder, and the business has remained in the family for three generations. The reopening is expected to draw loyal customers eager to enjoy the iconic mini-hot dogs once more.
