A $19 million infrastructure project on the New York State Thruway, stretching between Albany and Schenectady counties, has been completed. The project involved full and partial depth repairs on approximately 40 lane miles of I-90, enhancing the safety and efficiency of this vital route. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the completion, emphasizing the importance of modernizing transportation systems for better connectivity across the state.
The project, which began in 2024, included significant upgrades such as the reconstruction of shoulders, replacement of bridge joints, and installation of new guiderails. The work also involved milling and inlay operations, as well as the replacement of asphalt overlays to improve vertical clearance at interchange bridges. These enhancements aim to provide a smoother ride for the estimated 40,000 motorists who use this section of the Thruway daily.
Governor Hochul highlighted the project as an example of reinvesting toll revenue into the Thruway system, enhancing its safety and reliability. The project was completed on time and on budget by Callanan Industries, Inc., an Albany-based contractor.
State Senator Jeremy Cooney praised the project's completion, noting its significance in promoting safer and more efficient travel. The New York State Thruway Authority continues to focus on infrastructure improvements, with plans to invest $2.7 billion into similar projects over the next five years.
