The Scotia-Glenville Central School District is set to hold a public meeting tonight to discuss a new cell phone policy. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the middle school cafeteria. The proposed policy aligns with a statewide mandate that bans the use of internet-enabled devices, such as smartphones and smartwatches, during the school day.

According to the Scotia-Glenville Central School District, the policy aims to minimize distractions and ensure students remain focused on their academic responsibilities. Students will be required to store their devices in lockers or cubbies during school hours. Exceptions to the ban include situations where a device is needed for health management, emergencies, or specific educational purposes authorized by school officials.

This initiative is part of a broader effort across New York to reduce student use of internet-enabled devices during the school day. As reported by Campus Safety Magazine, the state law requires all public schools, charter schools, and Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) to adopt comprehensive policies by August 1.

The policy, which prohibits student suspensions for violations, will take effect this fall. Parents and guardians will be informed of methods to contact students during school hours through the school office. The Scotia-Glenville district has consulted with local stakeholders, including parents and employee organizations, to develop the policy, ensuring community involvement in the decision-making process.
