Starting today (July 15), several streets in Troy will close temporarily for the filming of a World War II movie. The closures will affect Second Street from Adams Street to Washington Street and Washington Place from Second Street to Third Street. These closures will occur at various times until July 23. Residents and visitors are advised to plan their travel accordingly and follow posted detour signs. The City of Troy has provided a full list of impacted areas on its Facebook page.
The film, set in 1939 Berlin, tells the story of a rabbi who remained in Nazi-occupied Berlin. As part of the production, actors will appear in historically accurate Nazi military uniforms. City officials have assured residents that these costumes are for filming purposes only and should not cause alarm. The Troy Police Department and local businesses have been informed in advance.
On Friday (July 18), fake smoke will be visible from St. Mary’s Church as part of a dramatized scene. The Troy Fire Department will be on-site to ensure safety during this special effects sequence.
The film’s significance is underscored by the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Nazi concentration camps. Laura Goldberg, a volunteer with the Jewish Federation of Northeastern New York, emphasized the importance of remembering history, especially for Holocaust survivors in the community. She hopes the film will be touching for them, as it tells an important story from their past.
