The Capital Region is set to experience another wave of extreme heat today (Wednesday, July 16), with temperatures expected to soar into the 90s. According to the National Weather Service, a heat advisory will be in effect from noon until 8 p.m., covering Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Montgomery counties. The heat index, which combines temperature and humidity, is predicted to reach between 95 and 100 degrees.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, remain indoors, and avoid direct sunlight to prevent heat-related illnesses. The National Weather Service recommends wearing lightweight clothing and limiting outdoor activities to early morning or evening hours. This heat advisory follows a recent period of extreme heat in late June, though the upcoming heat is expected to be less severe.
The National Weather Service issues heat advisories when the heat index is forecast to rise above 95 degrees. Christina Speciale, a lead meteorologist with the National Weather Service, stated that the oppressive conditions are expected to persist around the clock in portions of the Capital Region and Hudson Valley. She advised those without air conditioning to find a cooling center and emphasized the importance of drinking water even if not thirsty.
