Residents of Troy have the opportunity to voice their opinions on the proposed relocation of City Hall to the historic Proctors Theatre during a public meeting tonight (July 23) at the Lansingburgh Boys and Girls Club. The meeting, starting at 6 p.m., is the second in a series of public forums aimed at engaging the community in the decision-making process.
Mayor Carmella Mantello announced the move to Proctors Theatre, located on Fourth Street, as a step towards fiscal responsibility and historic preservation. The city has been renting space in the Hedley Park Place Building for over a decade, which has been a financial burden on taxpayers. The new location is expected to become the permanent home for City Hall by January 1, 2027. The mayor emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, "We want the community to be our partner in shaping what this new, permanent City Hall will look like."
The relocation plan has faced criticism from some, including City Council President Sue Steele, who raised concerns about the legality of the move and the transparency of the process. Steele stated that the city should address legal issues with the current lease before proceeding with the purchase of the new location.
The final public meeting will take place on August 13 at Proctors Theatre, providing residents with further opportunities to ask questions and share ideas about the project. More information is available on the city's website and social media channels.
