Residents of the Capital Region are facing a return of hot weather today (July 24) after a brief respite. The state Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has issued warnings about high heat and humidity across the area. According to the National Weather Service, temperature indexes are expected to range between 90 and 105 degrees in several locations.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity raises concerns about heat-related illnesses, such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, take frequent breaks if outdoors, and ensure that children, pets, and older adults remain in air-conditioned environments. Governor Kathy Hochul has emphasized the importance of preparation and communication to prevent heat-related fatalities, noting that extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States.
State agencies are actively monitoring the situation. The Department of Public Service is overseeing utility responses to potential power outages due to increased electricity demand. Cooling centers are available for those in need, and residents can find real-time alerts on the National Weather Service website.
The heat wave is expected to continue through Wednesday (July 30), with temperatures gradually declining into the 90s.
