The New York Racing Association (NYRA) is honoring first responders today at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs. This event, known as First Responders Day, offers free admission to firefighters, police officers, paramedics, and EMTs. A race will be named in their honor, and special recognition will be given to members of the Saratoga Springs Police Department and the Wilton Fire Department for their heroic rescue of a horse named Sly earlier this year.
The day is presented by Albany Med Health System and includes a performance by the New York State Troopers Pipes and Drums band, along with an appearance by the NYPD Ceremonial Unit. Ben & Jerry's will provide free ice cream to the first 500 attendees, served in a Saratoga Race Course-branded mini fire helmet cup, with donations benefiting the Saratoga Springs Firefighters Community Fund.
Additional activities include a live National Anthem performance by William Simkins, a registered nurse at Saratoga Hospital, and recruiting events highlighting careers in public service. Attendees can also purchase commemorative t-shirts, with proceeds supporting local police and fire department charities.
