Brown's Beach in Stillwater has been shut down for swimming until further notice due to concerns about harmful algae blooms. According to the Town of Stillwater, the closure began on Monday (July 28) at 11 a.m. Although swimming is prohibited, sunbathing and children's play on the beach are still allowed. The town is the only entity conducting mandatory weekly water tests on Saratoga Lake, where Brown's Beach is located. Harmful algae blooms can pose serious health risks to both humans and animals if they come into contact with or inhale the toxins produced by the algae.
The beach closure comes amid rising temperatures, which can contribute to the formation of algae blooms. The town has not specified when the beach will reopen for swimming, but lifeguards remain on duty to ensure the safety of visitors engaging in permitted activities. The town advises all lake visitors to remain vigilant, as algae blooms can occur unexpectedly.
Brown's Beach is a popular destination in the area, and the community is hopeful for cooler temperatures by the end of the week, which may help improve water conditions. The town continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates on the beach's status as more information becomes available.
Brown's Beach remains a cherished spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a variety of recreational activities when open. The town is committed to ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all beachgoers.
