Two men, Lucas Marrello, 21, and Luke Apy, 23, were arrested after allegedly trespassing at the Lehigh Cement Plant in Catskill on Friday (August 1). According to the New York State Police, the pair breached a perimeter fence to explore the abandoned site and camp out. Once inside, they climbed to the top of an empty cement silo. Apy reportedly removed a piece of plywood covering an opening and fell approximately 100 feet into the silo. He remained conscious and alert but was unable to exit the structure.
Emergency responders, including the Twin Cloves Technical Rescue Team, were dispatched to the scene just before 10:30 p.m. They successfully rescued Apy, who was then transported to Albany Medical Center for further evaluation. Both men were charged with third-degree criminal trespass, a Class B misdemeanor, and released on appearance tickets. They are scheduled to appear in Town of Catskill Court on September 4 at 3 p.m.
The incident involved multiple emergency services, including the Centerville Fire District, City of Kingston Fire, Cedar Grove Fire Company, Catskill EMS, Greene County Medics, Catskill Fire Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Office, and Malden West Camp Fire Station Company. The New York State Police are handling the case, and further details are expected as the court date approaches.
