Capital Region residents are being advised to prepare for high temperatures this week. The New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services warns that feels-like temperatures will range from 90 to 95 degrees until at least Wednesday (August 13), with some areas experiencing even hotter conditions. Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States, often resulting in heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat rash.

Governor Kathy Hochul has urged New Yorkers to take precautions as extreme temperatures affect most of the state. According to New York State's official website, feels-like temperatures in the mid to upper 90s are expected in regions such as Western New York, the Southern Tier, and Central New York. The heat is expected to persist through Wednesday, with humidity levels rising on Tuesday and Wednesday.

To help residents cope, New York State agencies are coordinating efforts to ensure the availability of cooling centers and provide guidance on managing extreme heat. The New York State Department of Health offers resources on recognizing heat-related illnesses and advises staying hydrated, limiting outdoor activities, and taking breaks in air-conditioned environments. The National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of staying informed about weather conditions and taking immediate action if heat illness symptoms occur.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather forecasts through official state websites and prepare accordingly. The state is also monitoring air quality, with advisories issued as needed to ensure public safety.
