The Montgomery County Health Department in Fonda has issued a rabies warning due to a recent increase in potential rabies exposures. Although none of the animals tested have been positive for rabies, officials urge pet owners to ensure their pets are vaccinated.
The Public Health Law mandates that all dogs, cats, and ferrets be vaccinated against rabies. Pets should receive their first vaccination at three months of age, followed by a second vaccination one year later, and then every three years thereafter. The county is hosting seven rabies vaccination clinics this year, with each clinic running from 9 to 11 a.m. A $10 donation is suggested for these free clinics.
Anyone who has been bitten or scratched by an unknown animal should seek immediate medical attention. For more information on rabies and vaccination clinics, residents can refer to the New York State Department of Health website.
