A recent poll by the Siena Research Institute reveals that New York Governor Kathy Hochul's lead over Congresswoman Elise Stefanik has decreased to 14 points, down from 23 points in June. The poll indicates that Hochul currently leads Stefanik 45% to 31% in a potential gubernatorial race. Hochul, who is seeking her second full term in 2026, has seen her job approval rating rise slightly to 53%, while 42% of those polled disapprove of her performance.

The poll highlights a shift among independent voters, who are now leaning towards Stefanik after previously favoring Hochul. According to The Hill, more than two-thirds of Democrats support Hochul, while three-quarters of Republicans back Stefanik. Downstate suburban voters have also shifted from favoring Hochul to narrowly supporting Stefanik.

Despite these gains, Stefanik faces challenges in increasing her name recognition. Siena pollster Steven Greenberg noted that 41% of voters are not familiar with her, and only 29% believe she has the right experience to be governor. However, Stefanik's team remains optimistic, with Executive Director Alex DeGrasse emphasizing her focus on issues like tax cuts and opposing Hochul's policies.

Stefanik has not officially announced her candidacy for governor and plans to make a decision after Election Day. Meanwhile, Hochul continues to maintain strong support in New York City, though her overall lead has narrowed.
