A major repair project on the arterial roadways connecting Albany's Empire State Plaza to Interstate 787 will begin on Monday (September 3). The New York State Office of General Services (OGS) announced the multi-year project, which aims to address long-standing water infiltration issues that have affected the structural integrity of the roads.
The project will involve replacing expansion joints, repairing damaged concrete, and restoring utility systems beneath the roadway. According to OGS Commissioner Jeanette Moy, the repairs are essential for improving the safety of the roadways. "In just a few years, this repair project will correct decades of water infiltration that impacted the structural integrity of the arterial roadways," Moy said, as reported by NEWS10 ABC.
Starting September 3, one eastbound lane will be closed, and a temporary roadway will be opened to maintain traffic flow onto I-787 and Routes Nine and 20. The lane diversion will continue until winter and resume in spring 2026. Westbound traffic and access to parking lots P1, P2, and P3 will not be affected. Signs will be posted to guide drivers through the changes.
The Times Union reports that the temporary lane, part of the multi-year project, will help maintain traffic flow while repairs are underway. The OGS has not provided a specific timeline for the project's completion, but they assure that landscaping will be restored once the project is finished.
