Schenectady County Airport is set to receive over $5.4 million in federal funding for pavement reconstruction. This funding is part of more than $66 million allocated to 22 airports across New York State through the Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Improvement Program and Airport Infrastructure Grant Program. The funds will be used to reconstruct a deteriorating ramp area outside the Empire State Aerosciences Museum and an adjacent taxi lane used by the Civil Air Patrol, according to The Daily Gazette.
Construction is expected to begin next spring, marking a significant step in the airport's five-year capital improvement plan. U.S. Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced the funding as part of efforts to enhance safety measures and improve passenger experiences at airports statewide. Senator Gillibrand stated, "Our airports are gateways for tourism, commerce, and opportunity."
The Schenectady County Airport has undergone extensive renovations in recent years, with millions invested in upgrades and private investments from businesses moving into the Airport Business Park. The latest funding was made possible through an agreement with the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, allowing the county to apply for funds to redevelop approximately 20 acres for aviation use. Gary Hughes, chair of the Schenectady County Legislature, praised the collaboration, emphasizing the shared commitment to modernizing the airport and supporting aviation-related businesses.
