Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has introduced the Protecting Health Care and Lowering Costs Act, aiming to reverse recent Medicaid cuts and extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits. During a visit to Saint Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, Schumer emphasized the potential impact of these cuts on over one million New Yorkers who risk losing healthcare coverage. The legislation seeks to counteract cuts made under President Trump's administration, which Schumer described as the "Big Ugly Betrayal" law.

According to Schumer's press release, the cuts threaten to affect more than 1.5 million New Yorkers and could lead to increased healthcare costs, reduced medical services, and financial strain on rural hospitals like Saint Mary's, which receives 28% of its revenue from Medicaid. Schumer's bill also aims to permanently extend ACA premium tax credits, which are crucial for keeping healthcare affordable for families.

During the announcement, Schumer was joined by Congressman Paul Tonko, State Assemblywoman Pat Fahy, and Amsterdam Mayor Michael Cinquanti.

The proposed legislation has garnered support from the entire Democratic caucus, with Schumer urging Senate Democrats to lead efforts to protect healthcare access. The bill comes as over 330 hospitals are at immediate risk of closing or reducing services due to the cuts. Schumer's initiative aims to prevent these outcomes and ensure continued access to vital healthcare services across New York and beyond.
