A major repair project on the arterial roadways connecting the Empire State Plaza to Interstate 787 begins today in Albany. The multi-year initiative aims to replace expansion joints, mitigate water infiltration, and restore concrete and structural components. The project is expected to last approximately three years.
As part of the project, eastbound lanes will be reduced to one lane, with a temporary roadway available for traffic merging onto I-787 and Routes 9 and 20. Westbound traffic will remain unaffected, and access to Swan Street and the arterial loop will stay open. According to the New York State Office of General Services, signage will guide drivers through the construction zone.
The project is part of a $12 million plan funded by the state to enhance safety and infrastructure. Commissioner Jeanette Moy emphasized the importance of the repairs, stating, "In just a few years, this repair project will correct decades of water infiltration that impacted the structural integrity of the arterial roadways." Lane diversions will continue until winter and resume in spring 2026. Future phases and lane diversions will be announced later this year.
