A recent contraband sweep at Greene Correctional Facility in Coxsackie uncovered a significant cache of illegal items, including drugs and weapons. The operation, conducted by the New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA), took place over two days, beginning on August 21.

During the sweep, an officer discovered two blue coffee cans between the perimeter fences, containing over 4,000 Ecstasy pills, two cellphones with chargers, earbud headphones, 233 grams of marijuana, tobacco, cigars, and air freshening spray. The officer retrieved the cans at approximately 8 AM, and it is believed they were intended for inmates but failed to clear the second fence.

Subsequent searches of four dormitories revealed over 500 grams of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana, hidden in dryer vents and sink rooms. Six weapons, including aluminum can tops with taped handles and ceramic blades, were also found, along with two tattoo guns hidden in an inmate's cell. K9 units assisted in the searches, alerting officers to additional contraband.

On August 22, further searches of two buildings resulted in the discovery of more marijuana, a ceramic blade, and 14 gallons of homemade alcohol hidden in inmate cubes. All seized items were taken as evidence, and inmates found with contraband face internal disciplinary charges.

Joe Horacek, NYSCOPBA Mid-Hudson Region Vice President, emphasized the importance of such operations in maintaining safety within correctional facilities. The Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) reiterated its commitment to preventing contraband in facilities, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance security measures.
