A raccoon in Hampton has tested positive for rabies, prompting the Washington County Department of Public Health to urge residents to avoid contact with wild or stray animals. Officials confirmed that individuals who had exposure to the rabid raccoon are currently receiving treatment.
To help prevent the spread of rabies, the department is emphasizing the importance of keeping pets' rabies vaccinations up-to-date. A rabies vaccine clinic is scheduled for September 13 at the Washington County Municipal Complex, with additional clinics planned for October 4 in Cambridge and November 8 in Kingsbury. Residents can register for these clinics online.
The public health department advises that all animal bites or potential rabies exposures be reported immediately by calling (518) 749-2400.
