Governor Kathy Hochul is standing by her decision to implement a cell phone ban in New York schools, citing safety and mental health benefits. In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Hochul emphasized the importance of students focusing entirely on their teachers during school hours. She explained that law enforcement officials advised against students having phones during crises, as they could inadvertently reveal their location to potential threats. Hochul stated, "They need to be 100% focused on the adult in the room, that teacher who’s gone through countless hours of training" (New York Post).
The phone ban, which took effect last week, has sparked debate among parents who worry about losing direct communication with their children during emergencies. However, Hochul assured that schools have procedures to inform parents during such situations. She highlighted that "phones can make kids easier to find for someone who intends them harm" (Spectrum Local News).
The initiative is part of a broader effort to create distraction-free learning environments and improve student mental health. Hochul's administration has also launched campaigns like "Get Offline, Get Outside" to encourage outdoor activities and reduce screen time (New York State Government).
