In the Capital Region, lawmakers and victims are demanding stricter oversight of dog boarding facilities following a tragic incident in Washington County. Cody Shields, who lost three dogs at Anastasia’s Acres due to a lack of ventilation, is advocating for new legislation. Shields has proposed the Safe Pet Boarding Act, which includes licensing requirements, safety standards, and penalties for negligence. The bill aims to recognize pets as family members and hold facilities accountable for their care.
Senator Jim Tedisco supports the initiative, emphasizing the need for uniform regulations across municipalities. He stated, "People who hurt animals go on to hurt people," highlighting the importance of the issue. Saratoga County officials are also working on a task force to address animal abuse and improve facility conditions. Sheriff Mike Zurlo and other officials agree that current laws are insufficient and call for stricter penalties and oversight.
The Safe Pet Boarding Act proposes six key components: state licensing, safety standards, regular inspections, transparency, penalties for negligence, and legal recognition of pets as family members. Shields has started a petition and is actively reaching out to lawmakers to gain support for the bill.
