After weeks of rising prices, gas costs have stabilized in the Capital Region, with the average price for a gallon of regular fuel holding at $3.21, the same as last week. However, this is 13 cents higher than prices a month ago. The state average is slightly higher at $3.25, while the national average stands at $3.17, according to AAA.

The steadying of gas prices comes as demand begins to decrease with the seasonal shift into fall. AAA reports that this decrease in demand is expected to eventually lead to a drop in pump prices.

Despite the current steadiness, prices have fluctuated significantly over the past year. According to LendingTree, the average U.S. gas price in August was $3.14 per gallon, down from $3.44 in August 2024. The highest prices in 2025 were recorded in April at $3.17 per gallon.

Looking ahead, experts anticipate that as demand continues to decline, gas prices may decrease further, providing some relief to motorists.
