A new poll from the Siena Research Institute reveals that New York Governor Kathy Hochul holds a significant lead over Congresswoman Elise Stefanik in a potential gubernatorial matchup. According to the poll, Hochul leads Stefanik by 25 points, with 52% of registered voters supporting Hochul compared to 27% for Stefanik. This marks an increase from the previous poll in August, where Hochul led by 14 points.

The poll, conducted between September 8 and 10, also highlights Hochul's growing support among Democrats and independent voters. Seventy-five percent of Democrats now back Hochul, up from 68% last month, while support for Stefanik among Republicans has decreased to 68% from 75%. Independent voters, who previously favored Stefanik by three points, now support Hochul by an 18-point margin.

Hochul's favorability rating has improved, reaching 45-42%, the highest since January 2024. Her job approval rating also stands at 54%, the best in over two years. According to Times Union, Hochul's focus on reducing crime rates and her opposition to President Donald Trump may have contributed to her rising popularity.

Despite the poll results, Stefanik has not yet officially announced her candidacy for governor. Her advisor, Alex DeGrasse, questioned the poll's accuracy, suggesting that it does not accurately reflect conservative support for Stefanik. The poll also indicates that Stefanik's association with President Trump, whose approval rating in New York is at 37%, could be a challenge for her campaign.

With over a year until the gubernatorial election, the political landscape may still change. However, the current poll results suggest that Hochul is in a strong position heading into the election year.
