Voters in Troy have approved the proposed 2026 budget for the Troy Public Library. The budget passed with a vote of 1,074 to 309, as reported by NEWS10 ABC. The approved budget includes significant financial changes, such as a 25% increase in employer healthcare contributions and a 9% salary raise for unionized employees. Additionally, an $80,000 Capital Project Fund has been established.
The new budget will cost the average homeowner with a $150,000 property about $38 per year, or just over $3 per month. Library Executive Director Timothy Furgal expressed gratitude for the community's support and highlighted plans to enhance community outreach by hiring a public information officer. The library partners with local groups to offer services like free fresh produce and school supplies.
Despite the approval, some community members, including former city lawmaker Kim Ashe-McPherson, have criticized the 30% tax levy increase, calling it excessive. However, Furgal and union representatives argue that the increase is necessary to maintain operations and retain staff.
In addition to the budget, voters elected new trustees Marie Gavazzi and Anthony Mohen to three-year terms on the library board. The remaining one-year seats are still being determined.
