In response to a series of tragic accidents, including the death of his son, Assemblyman Robert Smullen is advocating for safety improvements on Route 7 in Niskayuna. His son, Alexander John "AJ" Smullen, was struck and killed by a vehicle in February 2024. Since then, the road has seen multiple fatalities, prompting calls for action from both residents and officials.
The New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced plans to install a raised median and other traffic-calming measures along the stretch of Route 7 from Mohegan Road to Union Avenue. DOT Region 1 Director Michael Arthur stated that while the roadway meets current safety standards, recent incidents have heightened community concerns. "We all share the same goal — safety," Arthur emphasized, noting ongoing discussions with local officials to explore further enhancements.
Local residents, including Joe Yakel, have voiced frustration over the lack of substantial safety measures. Yakel noted that over 90% of vehicles speed on the road, making it dangerous for both drivers and pedestrians. "There are no traffic lights, there are no crosswalks," Yakel said, underscoring the need for immediate action.
Assemblyman Smullen is pushing for legislation that would require memorial signs at sites of fatal accidents to raise awareness about reckless driving. His proposal has gained bipartisan support, with state Senator Pat Fahy advocating for additional measures like lane narrowing and improved signage.
Niskayuna Town Supervisor Erin Cassady-Dorian expressed her frustration with the state's slow response, despite the town receiving funding from the Capital Region Transportation Council to evaluate and improve safety on Route 7. "We can’t do anything without the Department of Transportation specifically allowing it," she said.
Governor Kathy Hochul is currently reviewing the proposed legislation, with a decision expected by the end of the year. Meanwhile, Assemblyman Smullen continues to advocate for comprehensive safety measures to prevent further tragedies on Route 7.
