An investigation is underway in Schenectady following the discovery of human remains on Monday (October 13) at the corner of Westover Place and Georgetta Dix Plaza. Workers conducting excavation work unearthed an iron casket believed to date back to the 1800s.
According to Times Union, the remains were found inside the casket, and authorities do not suspect any foul play. The site is not being treated as a crime scene, but police have secured the area while the investigation continues.
Detective Lt. Bradley Carlton told WNYT that the New York State Police Forensic Investigation Unit is involved in the investigation. An anthropologist has been called in to assist with identifying the remains.
Marietta Carr, a librarian and archivist at the Schenectady County Historical Society, mentioned that historical maps indicate the area was once known as Cemetery Street, suggesting it may have been a burial ground.
The discovery has prompted authorities to remain on-site for several days to examine the area thoroughly. The public is advised to stay clear of the location as officials conduct their investigation.
