The Schenectady County Legislature has unanimously approved the 2026 Operating Budget, which totals $460,735,115 and maintains a zero percent increase in the county’s property tax levy. The approval also includes the 2026-2031 Capital Improvement Program, amounting to $148 million.

The budget allocates over $27 million for capital projects in 2026. Key projects include more than $11.2 million for SUNY Schenectady, $5.5 million for road improvements, and $5.7 million for the General Aviation North Apron Reconstruction Project. Additionally, $1.7 million will be used to upgrade the county dispatch system.

The budget ensures the continuation of essential services for county residents. It includes a 3 percent increase in funding for SUNY Schenectady, workforce development opportunities, and treatment programs for heroin and opioid use. It also supports naloxone training, Day Hab support, and Glendale Home's certified nursing assistant training program.

Gary Hughes, chair of the Schenectady County Legislature, emphasized the importance of these investments for the community's future. The budget's approval reflects the county's commitment to maintaining services without increasing taxes, a move that is expected to benefit residents in the long term.
