The 49th Annual Pumpkin Patrol begins tonight, with New York State Police and volunteers teaming up to ensure safety along the Thruway. Running through tomorrow night, this event aims to prevent Halloween pranks and protect drivers from dangerous activities like speeding or driving under the influence. The Pumpkin Patrol, which began as a volunteer effort in 1976 in Fort Johnson, Montgomery County, is now coordinated by Troop T of the State Police, who have been in charge since 1990.

According to the State Police, several hundred volunteers from local Citizen Band radio clubs and amateur radio organizations will monitor overpasses, watching for suspicious activities. These volunteers can quickly alert nearby State Police patrols or local law enforcement to prevent hazards to motorists.

The initiative coincides with other State Police enforcement activities during the Halloween weekend, which include increased patrols targeting impaired, distracted, and aggressive driving behaviors.

Troop T Commander Major Andre J. Ray emphasized the importance of this initiative in ensuring the safety of motorists and deterring dangerous pranks during the Halloween season.
