A Catskill woman, Carrie Weiser, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for the 2021 stabbing death of 68-year-old Scott Myers. The sentencing took place on Thursday (November 6) in Greene County Court, concluding a lengthy legal process that began nearly four years ago. Weiser, now 36, was convicted of second-degree murder in June 2024.
During the trial, Weiser's defense argued that she acted in self-defense, claiming Myers attempted to rape her. However, the jury rejected this argument. According to WNYT, Greene County District Attorney Joseph Stanzione stated that Weiser had serious mental health issues and showed no interest in seeking treatment. He noted that another man had previously come forward, alleging that Weiser stabbed him during a sexual encounter in 2020.
The case was complicated by the discovery of security footage recorded at Myers' home. The footage, which was unlocked more than a year after Weiser's arrest, was played in court and included conversations between Weiser and Myers. According to the Times Union, Weiser asked to see Myers' knives, assuring him, "I'm not going to stab you."
Weiser's defense team sought a reduced sentence under the 2019 Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, arguing that past abuse influenced her behavior. However, the court found no evidence supporting these claims, and Judge Charles Tailleur rejected the application. As CBS6 Albany reported, Stanzione described Weiser as "cunning" and noted her lack of remorse throughout the proceedings. She will be eligible for parole in 20 years, in her mid-50s.
