Congresswoman Elise Stefanik is set to face a challenge from Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman in the Republican primary for New York governor. Blakeman, a longtime friend of President Trump, officially announced his candidacy on Tuesday (December 9). His entry into the race marks a significant development in the Republican contest to challenge Governor Kathy Hochul in 2026.

Blakeman's decision to run comes after he toured the state, gauging support for his candidacy. He emphasized the importance of competition within the party, stating, "We're not like the Democratic Party that had a coronation for Kamala Harris. Competition is a good thing" as reported by CNY Central.

Despite Blakeman's entry, Stefanik appears to have strong support within the party. According to a November poll, Stefanik leads Blakeman by nearly 70 points among Republican primary voters, with 74% support compared to Blakeman's 5% as noted by the Washington Examiner. Stefanik's campaign has highlighted her endorsements from more than 70% of GOP chairs and her significant fundraising efforts.

President Trump has yet to endorse either candidate, stating that both Stefanik and Blakeman are "great people." Meanwhile, Governor Hochul, who is also facing a primary challenge from Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado, expressed amusement at the potential Republican primary, saying, "Let 'em fight it out, it'll be a good spectator sport."

The primary race is expected to be intense, with both candidates vying for the opportunity to challenge Hochul, whose favorability has fluctuated throughout the year. The outcome of the Republican primary will be crucial in determining the party's strategy to win the governor's mansion in a predominantly Democratic state.
