Brendan Cox will continue to lead the Albany Police Department as chief, as announced by Mayor-elect Dorcey Applyrs on Thursday (December 11). Cox, who previously retired in 2017, returned to the department last year and will now take on the role permanently when Applyrs assumes office in January.
Cox's reappointment is driven by his experience, commitment to reform, and understanding of Albany's neighborhoods. Applyrs emphasized that his leadership will help address public safety concerns and improve community relations. "Changing that narrative starts at the top," Applyrs stated, highlighting the importance of building trust and stabilizing the department during a critical time for the city.
Cox initially served as chief from 2015 until his retirement in 2017. He returned as interim chief last year after Mayor Kathy Sheehan appointed him to replace Eric Hawkins. Despite initially not intending to stay long-term, Cox acknowledged the significant work still needed, including restaffing the department and enhancing health and wellness initiatives.
Both Applyrs and Cox aim to counter the perception that Albany is unsafe, despite data showing a decrease in crime, including a 47% reduction in shootings with injury since 2024, according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice. Cox also plans to expand the Community Advocacy Response Team, which pairs social service caseworkers with law enforcement for certain emergencies.
To further engage with the community, Applyrs and Cox will host meet-and-greet events in January and February, allowing residents to voice their concerns about public safety directly.
