A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Capital Region, including Albany, New York, starting today (Friday, December 26) at 4 p.m. and lasting until 1 p.m. Saturday. According to the National Weather Service, the area could see total snow accumulations of three to seven inches, with some locations possibly receiving up to ten inches.
The snow is expected to develop from west to east around sunset and continue overnight, with moderate to heavy snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour possible. The snow will gradually taper off to scattered snow showers and flurries by Saturday morning.
Road conditions are likely to become slick and hazardous, especially during the evening commute. The National Weather Service advises travelers to slow down and use caution while driving. If travel is necessary, it is recommended to keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of emergencies.
Residents are also advised to be aware of potential ice accumulation on power lines and tree branches, which could lead to power outages. The advisory covers areas including Southern Herkimer, Southern Fulton, Northern Saratoga, and Eastern Albany, among others.
