Albany International Airport in Colonie experienced a record-breaking year in 2025, with just under 1.6 million departing passengers, surpassing the previous record of 1.56 million set in 2004. The airport saw a significant increase in travel during the holiday season, particularly in December, when a record number of Americans took to the skies.

Several factors contributed to the airport's success, including increased business travel due to growth in the semiconductor industry and a rebound in travel demand as people prioritized in-person experiences post-pandemic. According to Times Union, Matt Hunter, the airport's director of communications, stated that Albany International has expanded its services by adding new airlines such as Breeze Airways, Allegiant Air, and Avelo Airlines, offering nonstop flights to 25 cities.

The airport's growth is part of a broader national trend of rising air travel. Tara Ricard, an AAA marketing manager, noted that air travel is increasing nationwide as people fly to various destinations, including those before taking cruises.

Ongoing renovations at Albany International are expected to attract more travelers in the future. In August, the airport completed the first phase of a $13.36 million upgrade to Concourse A, funded by a federal grant from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Additionally, a $100 million main terminal expansion project, supported by state and federal grants, is set to be completed in 2026. These improvements aim to enhance facilities for families and business travelers and upgrade the security queuing area.

Despite winter weather challenges, the airport successfully managed high passenger volumes with the help of plows, deicing crews, and Transportation Security Administration workers. Hunter expressed confidence in the airport's ability to handle increased traffic, stating, "We are set up to handle it."
