Siena University has appointed Tim Cox as the new head coach for its men's lacrosse team following the tragic death of former coach Liam Gleason. Cox, who has served as Gleason's assistant for seven seasons, expressed his commitment to continue Gleason's legacy. "It is with great humility, honor, and gratitude to be able to carry forth the legacy of Liam Gleason," Cox stated.
Gleason, who passed away last month after an accident at his home, was instrumental in leading the Saints to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship and an NCAA tournament berth. His passing has deeply affected the Siena community, with about $800,000 raised for his family. Gleason's impact was evident when dozens, including Siena players and University at Albany community members, paid tribute to him as he underwent organ donation surgery.
Cox, a Schenectady native, brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having previously coached at Robert Morris and UAlbany. He also played professionally for the Denver Outlaws. Under his guidance, Siena achieved an 11-5 record in 2025, marking its most successful season in a decade. Siena's Vice President and Director of Athletics, John D’Argenio, praised Cox's leadership, noting his steady guidance through the team's recent challenges.
Cox is set to lead the team into the upcoming season, with a notable game against Albany on March 17, where tributes to Gleason are expected. The match will be a rematch of the 2025 NCAA opening-round tournament game.
