Albany Mayor Dorcey Applyrs delivered her first State of the City address on Tuesday (January 27), outlining ambitious plans to revitalize New York's capital city.

In her hour-long speech at the Albany West Community Center, Mayor Applyrs focused on key priorities including public safety, infrastructure improvements, and economic development. "It is critical that our young people and young professionals see a future here in our city," Mayor Applyrs said during her address.

Among her administration's top initiatives is a plan to remove old lead water pipes throughout the city, establish a new rideshare program specifically designed for senior citizens, and breathe new life into downtown Albany's economy. The mayor also announced the formation of a new advisory group to strengthen connections with regional colleges and universities.

Public safety featured prominently in the address, with Applyrs acknowledging it as "the big, hairy elephant in the room." While noting that crime statistics have improved, she recognized persistent concerns about safety. Her administration has appointed Brenden Cox as police chief and is developing incentives to recruit and retain more officers. Additionally, the city is implementing a Community Advocacy Response Team (CART) to address non-violent incidents that require social workers rather than police intervention.

Housing emerged as another critical focus area. A recent audit revealed Albany is facing a housing crisis with approximately 4,000 vacant units sitting idle. The mayor emphasized the need to balance affordable housing with mixed-income development while strengthening code enforcement.

To enhance quality of life, Applyrs announced an ambassador program to improve hospitality and beautification throughout Albany. Her administration is also launching a "Keep Albany Clean" initiative that includes deploying more trash cans on city streets.

The mayor's vision for youth engagement includes establishing a youth advisory program to give young people a voice in decision-making processes. Her administration has already taken steps to revitalize the city's nightlife, having launched a nightlife advisory council earlier this month.

Throughout her address, Mayor Applyrs urged residents to participate in the city's transformation, emphasizing community engagement through her "Activate Albany" survey and upcoming community conversations. "Tonight isn't just about one track, it's about the full mix. Turning the lights back on only works if we keep them on," she told attendees.
