A water main break on Amsterdam Avenue in Menands has created hazardous icy conditions as crews work to repair the damage and restore water service to affected residents.

The break, located between Hampton Street and Hendrick Avenue, was discovered early Thursday (February 5) with water flowing downhill and immediately freezing due to the cold temperatures, according to Menands Mayor Brian Marsh. The village has closed a portion of the road while repairs are underway.

"The crews have found the break and are working to remove the pipe," Marsh said. "Once removed, the pipe will be replaced with a plastic piece and connector for water to be turned back on for residents."

The Department of Public Works and water department teams were dispatched to the area to both remove accumulated ice and fix the break. Officials are urging residents to use extreme caution on sidewalks and streets in the affected area due to significant ice formation downstream from the break.

The frigid temperatures, currently around 16 degrees in the area, have complicated cleanup efforts as the volume of water quickly turns to ice on contact with the cold surfaces, creating dangerous conditions for pedestrians and drivers.

Mayor Marsh noted that repairs are expected to be completed within the day, with water service restored to affected residents afterward. For residents with questions or concerns, officials have provided a contact number: (518) 434-2927.

Interestingly, this section of Menands where the break occurred is already scheduled for infrastructure improvements. According to Marsh, the damaged pipe is part of a larger complete replacement project expected to be finished this summer.
