A 67-year-old woman died after being trapped in a house fire Monday morning in the town of Shawangunk, while a 70-year-old man who escaped the blaze remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The Ulster County 911 center received a call around 9:45 a.m. from a home on Plains Road in Wallkill, according to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office. The woman who called reported she was trapped inside the burning residence.

When police and firefighters arrived at the scene, they encountered a fully engulfed structure fire. The man had already escaped the home but sustained injuries from the fire. Crews extracted the woman through a window, and she had suffered significant burns.

Both victims were transported to St. Luke's Hospital in Orange County for treatment. The woman later died from her injuries, while the man was transferred to Westchester Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition. Officials are withholding the names of both individuals pending family notification.

The cause and origin of the fire remain under investigation by the Ulster County Fire Investigation Unit. Multiple agencies responded to the emergency, including the Shawangunk Police Department, New York State Police, and several local fire departments and emergency medical services, according to Hudson Valley One.
